The Firewall Deadline Nobody Can Extend
Sophos UTM and the SG Series appliances reached end of life on June 30, 2026. Most licenses stopped there, and all UTM SKUs were deactivated in July. But a portion of the install base received extensions, and for them the final date is December 31, 2026: the absolute hard stop when support, RMA, hotfixes, and threat intelligence updates cease permanently, regardless of any license expiry date. There is no renewal path left. Every organization still running UTM today has roughly 90 days to be on something else, or to run an unsupported security appliance on the edge of their network.

Sophos UTM (SG) official end of life
Dec 31, 2026
Absolute support hard stop, no exceptions
90 days
What remains of the migration window as of late September
Why Staying With Sophos Is Not the Easy Option
Normally a vendor EOL favors the incumbent: customers just upgrade to the newer model and move on. This one is different. UTM 9 and the replacement platform, Sophos Firewall (SFOS), are architecturally different products. Configuration backups cannot be restored from one to the other, so the migration is a from-scratch rebuild of firewall rules, VPN configurations, and policies, whichever direction a customer goes. When the switching cost to your current vendor is nearly the same as the switching cost to a new one, the decision reopens completely. Every firewall vendor knows this, which is why the remaining UTM install base is one of the most actively hunted lists in network security right now.
When migration to the incumbent is a rebuild anyway, an end-of-life deadline stops being a renewal event and becomes an open RFP.
Who Is Still Running UTM, and Why That Matters
Sophos UTM was a favorite of small and mid-sized businesses and the MSPs who serve them. The organizations still on it this late are, by definition, the slow movers: lean IT teams, budget-constrained companies, and firms where the firewall simply worked and nobody wanted to touch it. That profile cuts two ways. They are harder to shake loose, but once the deadline forces their hand, they make fast, practical decisions. And the security pressure is real: an edge device that stops receiving threat intelligence and hotfixes is not a neutral risk, it is the exact class of device attackers target first. Procrastination ends when the auditor, the cyber insurer, or the compliance checklist asks about unsupported infrastructure.
The Q4 Playbook for Competing Vendors
- Scope the list now. The window is 90 days. A campaign that starts in December is a campaign that missed.
- Segment by urgency. Companies with compliance obligations (finance, healthcare, legal) feel the December 31 date hardest. Lead with them.
- Message the rebuild, not the deadline. Every competitor is shouting “Sophos EOL!” The sharper message is: “You have to rebuild your firewall config from scratch either way. Here is why you should rebuild it on ours.”
- Arm the channel. UTM sold heavily through MSPs and VARs. Partner-led displacement offers will move this base faster than direct outreach alone.
How Revnity Marketing Helps Firewall Vendors Work This Window
The hard part is not the pitch, it is knowing exactly which organizations are still running Sophos UTM in your target region and size band, and who owns the decision. Revnity Marketing provides verified install-base data for network security platforms, including current Sophos UTM and SG Series deployments, with verified IT decision-maker contacts attached. If you sell firewalls, this is a timed list with a built-in expiry date. For the campaign framework to run on it, see [how to win your competitors’ customers using technographic data].
